The didones arrived at the end of the eighteenth century and rewrote what a serif could be. Stress turned fully vertical, contrast widened until hairlines became genuinely hair-thin, and serifs flattened into unbracketed lines. Rationalist in origin, they now read as pure elegance, which is why fashion never lets them go.
